Film and Media Arts in Social Science Education: A Review of Practices and Outcomes

Abstract

This research explores how arts-based pedagogies can foster emotional intelligence and empathy in social science education. Understanding social issues requires not only cognitive skills but also emotional engagement. Through activities like storytelling, theatre, and visual arts, students are encouraged to connect with diverse perspectives. The study shows that such approaches enhance empathy and interpersonal skills. Students demonstrated greater sensitivity to issues such as inequality and discrimination. The research also highlights improved classroom relationships and communication. Teachers observed increased student participation and collaboration. Challenges such as time constraints and assessment methods were discussed. The paper advocates for integrating emotional learning into curricula.
